🎠 QB Carousel
As soon as one quarterback stuck his foot out the door, another walked through.
College football free agency has hit the Sooners hard following an unexpected coaching change. But the transfer portal was much kinder to OU on Monday, when it provided a quick remedy to the latest Sooner quarterback to explore a departure.
Caleb Williams put his name in the database that allows him to freely talk with other schools and make visit them. He didn’t rule out a return to Norman, stating as much in his letter posted to his Twitter account.
But then Dillon Gabriel, the former Central Florida quarterback who was already committed to transferring to UCLA, flipped to Oklahoma following Williams’ announcement. Not a bad rebound by the Sooners, who went without a proven quarterback on their roster for about … four whole hours.

Sure, Williams could decide OU is the best fit for him and come back, but the speedy moves by OU athletics director Joe Castiglione and coach Brent Venables to release a statement after Williams’ announcement and Gabriel having a commitment graphic ready to go by dinner show this decision was fully expected and communicated well in advance of Monday. So, OU did the best thing to protect itself, while Williams does the same. It’s unclear where Williams will ultimately land, considering every school not named Ohio State or Alabama has to at least make that phone call, right?
